Excel 2007 COUNTBLANK Function

The COUNTBLANK function, one of Excel's COUNT functions, is used to count up the number of blank cells in a selected range.

The syntax for the COUNTBLANK function is:

=COUNTBLANK( Range)

Range - the group of cells the function is to search.

Example Using Excel's COUNTBLANK Function:

Note: For help with this example, see the image to the right.

  1. Enter the following data into cells:

    D1 - cabbages , D2 - carrots
    D3 - leave blank , D4 - radishes
    D5 - potatoes , D6 - parsnips

  2. Click on cell E1 - the location where the
    results will be displayed.

  3. Click on the Formulas tab.

  4. Choose More Functions > Statistical from the ribbon
    to open the function drop down list.

  5. Click on COUNTBLANK in the list to bring up the
    function's dialog box.

  6. In the dialog box, click on the button at the end of the Range line to return to your spreadsheet.

  7. Drag select cells D1 to D6 on the spreadsheet.

  8. Click on the button at the end of the Range line to return to the dialog box.

  9. Click OK.

  10. The answer "1" should appear in cell E1 since there is only one blank cell in the range D1 to D6.
